How to Prepare for Flight School

As someone who wants to become a pilot, attending flight school will be an exciting and challenging experience, but you don’t have to wait for your first day of school to begin your training—there are several ways you can prepare before flight school in Florida starts that can make your learning experience more efficient and help you excel at test times.

Get the Student Pilot Guide

The FAA website offers a free download of their Student Pilot Guide. In it, you’ll find all of the information you need about choosing an Orlando flight school, medical requirements, getting study materials, what to expect from the knowledge test, and much more.

Learn Note-Taking and Study Skills

It may have been a while since you studied or took notes, so it can be a great help to hone these skills before you begin flight school. Go online to research note-taking and learn how to glean the most information from what is given to you in class. Find the method that works best for you, and then practice that method at home by watching lecture videos and seeing how much information you can record on each.

You may find that note-taking is most easily done from a laptop. Or, a pen and paper may work best for you. Whatever your style, it’s a good idea to identify and use it well before you begin flight school.

There are as many ways to study as there are to take notes. Research and practice different study methods so that you’re doing what’s most effective by the time you begin attending classes.

Self-Directed Ground School

Ground school will teach you the theoretical basics of flight, including instruments, weather, and aerodynamics. Obtain course material beforehand to review all of this information several weeks prior to starting flight school. You can contact the flight academy you’ve enrolled in, or visit their website to download course materials.

You can also learn certain skills like weather watching and instrument reading before starting flight school. Find information online about weather identification and the instrument panel of the aircraft you plan to fly.

Be a Shadow, Learn the Language

You may be able to sit in on a few in-class and in-aircraft lessons prior to beginning flight training. This can help you get a better understanding of the pace of lessons and the amount of information given in each.

During shadowing, you’ll hear communication between pilots and air traffic controllers. Although you’ll learn this language in class, you can get a head start by listening to communications from busy towers and getting familiar with the terms they use.
